A high-level biosafety lab at Fort Detrick has paused research following multiple safety violations, prompting concern from Maryland officials.

By yourNEWS Media Newsroom

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has suspended research operations at the Integrated Research Facility at Fort Detrick (IRF-Frederick) in Maryland after a series of safety violations, including an incident involving compromised protective equipment, NIH officials told The Epoch Times on May 5.

NIH confirmed that one researcher had punctured another’s protective suit—an incident that raised serious biosafety concerns. Other violations were not publicly disclosed. The facility, which handles some of the world’s most dangerous pathogens—including Ebola, MERS, and avian influenza—is rated for Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) research, the highest level of biological containment.
