Pope Leo visits Algiers Mosque and believes catholic and Muslims share beliefs.
Pope Benedict
had given a lecture at the university in Regensburg, Germany on the relationship between faith and reason. To introduce his topic, he recounted a dialogue between a 14th-century Christian emperor, Manuel II Paeologus, and a Muslim scholar. He quoted the emperor, who said, “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”
